Rice is life for the people of western Odisha. It is the main cereal for majority population. The demand for rice is growing with ever-increasing population. Rice is water intensive crop. Each kg of rice produced with irrigation requires 8000-9000 liters of water. In the context of climate change and shortage of water SRI method of rice cultivation is an appropriate model to produce more

yeild low water requirements and without hampering the soil quality.

ADARSA is working on promotion of SRI in 7blocks of the district. NABARD is supporting in 16 villages and SDTT is promoting in 146 villages for up scaling SRI in Sambalpur district. The broad objective of the initiatives is to empower the small and marginal farmers by promotion SRI to ensure sustainable livelihood and food security.

Intervention for SRI Promotion

  • Preparation of farmers profile, data collection and compilation   
  • FormationofSRI group at village  and GP level
  • Farmers meeting on need assessment of SRI
  • Practical training to farmers on SRI and SA and its impact
  • Exposure visit of the farmers and staff
  • Input support such as markers, weeders, bio fertilizer to the  farmers for practicing SRI
  • Demonstration of SRI in 16 plots
  • Block level workshop on SRI
  • IEC Material

A Case Study of Aswani Badhei Aswini Badhei

Initially he was not interested in the new method, but after pursuance of ADARSA, he agreed to cultivate paddy using SRI technology. He selected a short duration paddy called swarna which yields in 120 days. He used the methods SRI, told Jyoti case-study-img2Satapathy staff of ADARSA. He purified the seeds in cow urine and put the seeds for seedling. After 12 days, he transplanted it using SRI method in his field. Seeing this, the other neighbours were started to criticize him, but the consent support and pursuance by the staffof ADARSA he regained his confidence. After weeding (15 days from the transplanting) the plants grown up and the yield not only satisfied him but also silenced his critics in the village. The plants grown up in such a manner that no one believe its yielding. At the time of crop cutting we requested some of the media to highlight its crop and to know actual production of SRI Incomparision to conventional method. As per our request, representative of OTV, NAXTRA Chanel are present  and telecast on their croup cutting process ,and  production of 25 q of paddy in 1 acre of field attract  to other farmers of kolpali village.  Through experience of Ashwini Badhei, other farmers also like to adopt SRI Technology. Media highlighted thecase-study-img3 mater; Then NABARD took care to help the SRI farmers under formation of krushak club named RADHAKRISHANA Krushak Club where Aswini Badhei became a volunteer No 1. Now the village- Kolpali became a model village in SRI. Now NABARD lunched seed village programe and model village programe village looking the unity of the farmers specially.
